Questions
Plain answers to common questions.
What should I do right after an accident?
Make sure everyone is safe first, and call 911 if anyone is hurt. Then take photos of both cars and the scene, swap names and insurance details with the other driver, and report the accident to your insurer.
Can I choose my own body shop?
Usually, yes. Your insurer may suggest a shop, but where the car is repaired is normally your choice. If you’re unsure, check your policy or ask your insurer.
Who decides what my insurance pays for?
Your insurer decides what your policy covers and how much it pays. A body shop can explain the damage and the repair it needs, but coverage decisions are between you and your insurer.
What is a VIN, and where do I find it?
The VIN is your car’s 17-character ID number. It’s on your insurance card and registration, and on the dashboard by the windshield on the driver’s side. Having it ready helps the shop look up the right parts.
Is my car safe to drive after a small accident?
Not always. Damage you can’t see can affect lights, sensors, steering or the frame. If a warning light comes on, a light is broken, or the car pulls or sounds different, it’s safer to have it checked before driving.
How long will the repair take?
It depends on the damage, the parts needed and, often, how long the insurance approval takes. The shop can give you a clearer idea once it has seen the car.
What’s the difference between OEM and aftermarket parts?
OEM parts are made by your car’s maker. Aftermarket parts are made by other companies. Your policy may say which kind it pays for, so ask your insurer and the shop before the repair starts.
